You’ve been blaming AI for your job search. The data says think again.

Working on both sides of the hiring table, we've heard it all. From employers trying to manage hundreds of applications, and from job seekers convinced a machine is deciding their fate before a human ever sees their name. That last one has gotten louder every year, and it's become the default explanation for every unanswered application, every rejection, every silence. AI has taken over the hiring conversation, and we kept getting asked the same question: is it actually true? So Hire Value Inc. and Verve Recruitment Group decided to stop speculating and go get the answer.

Out of 1,815 job seekers we surveyed, 86 per cent believe AI is the reason they’re not getting interviews. So we went and asked the employers.
Only 15 per cent of them are actually using AI to pre-screen applicants. The other 78 per cent are using traditional knockout questions or straight-up human review. The barrier most candidates are convinced is there? It mostly isn’t.
That finding hit differently than we expected. Because the job search experience right now genuinely feels like you’re throwing your resume into a void. You spend 30 minutes on an application and hear nothing back, and it’s easy to blame a machine. Turns out, a person made that call.
The real problem is volume. AI tools have made it faster and easier than ever to apply to more jobs, write a sharper cover letter, and tailor applications at scale. In practice, that means employers are now fielding hundreds of applications for a single role, and the pool of candidates who look qualified on paper has never been bigger. Being good on paper used to mean something. Now it just means you’re in the pile.
So if AI isn’t the gatekeeper at the front door, where is it actually headed in hiring? After the interview.
The most interesting and underused application for AI in this space is candidate relationship management. What if the employer who didn’t hire you six months ago used AI to stay in touch, keep you warm, and reach back out the moment a role opened up? What if getting a no didn’t mean falling off the radar entirely? That’s the version of AI in hiring that actually helps people.
This research is part of an ongoing collaboration between Hire Value Inc. and Verve Recruitment Group, looking at AI and hiring from both sides of the equation. More to come.
